Freshman Fine Arts Proposal for Exhibition
The Universal Mandala: Symbol for Sacred Oneness, Meditation and Wholeness
CONCEPT / DESCRIPTION:
The Mandala art show aims to depict the qualities of sacred oneness, meditation, and wholeness. We live in contemporary society often under the illusion that we are separate human beings. The Mandala art show will be a counterbalance to the states of human separation and often fragmentation that we experience in contemporary society at large. The Mandala art show will be a meditation to galvanize awareness and action towards harmony and spiritual wholeness in our society.
Mandala is a Sanskrit term loosely meaning a circle. It is a cosmic model for wholeness and an organizational structure for life including both objective and non-objective realities. The geometric Mandala is prevalent in many diverse cultures of the world symbolizing cosmic harmony around a unifying center. Native Americans, Australian Aborigines, and Tibetan monks create Mandala sand paintings for ritual healing. Carl Jung sees the Mandala as a therapeutic model of unconscious self for healing and wholeness. The art show will present Mandala art from the unique perspective of meditation, healing and aesthetic beauty.
The Mandala art in the show will range from contemporary geometric and visionary Mandala art to primitive Mandala art. There will be a feature Mandala Art Installation presented in the show. An optional public activity of creating Mandala art on premises or screening of Mandala art will complement the art show.
INSTALLATION:
The exhibition will consist of approximately 40* art works. Physical space requires about 150 linear running feet of wall space. A single Mandala Art Installation requires floor space of approximately 10-12 square feet. An optional activity of either creating Mandala art or screening Mandala art will require separate room or space.
